How should a buyer choose?
1. Start with the required function
Ask whether the luminaire or sign needs to be visibly illuminated while the normal supply is healthy. If the answer is yes, maintained operation may be appropriate. If the fitting is only required when normal lighting fails, non-maintained operation may be suitable.
2. Review the actual environment
The same building may need more than one mode. A dim customer area, a continuously occupied exit route, a bright warehouse aisle and a service room do not present the same visibility conditions. Do not select one mode for an entire project only because it is easier to quote.
3. Confirm local requirements
Emergency-lighting requirements are jurisdiction-specific. For example, UK fire-safety guidance requires emergency routes and exits that need illumination to have adequate emergency lighting if normal lighting fails. It does not make one operating mode universally correct for every room or project. Confirm the design with the applicable authority, project consultant or qualified emergency-lighting designer.
4. Separate operating mode from emergency duration
“Maintained” does not mean “three-hour,” and “non-maintained” does not mean “one-hour.” Mode describes when the light operates. Duration describes how long the emergency source is designed to support the rated emergency output under specified conditions. Treat them as separate lines in the RFQ.
5. Check wiring and control behaviour
Some luminaires are offered in maintained, non-maintained or switchable configurations, but this must be confirmed from the exact model and wiring instructions. Do not assume that every maintained fitting can be converted on site or that every emergency driver supports both modes.
What about emergency exit signs?
Maintained operation is frequently selected for internally illuminated exit signs that must remain visible during normal occupancy. However, the correct solution still depends on the sign system, ambient lighting, building use and local rules. An externally illuminated or photoluminescent solution has different design conditions, so the sign type and operating mode should be stated separately in the specification.

- Project country or region and the standard requested by the project
- Product role: escape-route light, open-area light, high-risk task-area light or exit sign
- Maintained, non-maintained or switchable operation
- Required emergency duration and emergency lumen output

- Mounting method, cable entry and available installation space
- Housing material, dimensions, colour and IP requirement
- Test button, indicator and self-test requirements
- Required reports, certificates, labels, packaging and inspection method
