These examples deliberately do not collapse into one artwork. A green running-person pictogram and a red or green word "EXIT" are not interchangeable simply because both appear in export catalogs. Translation, supplementary text and arrow conventions must come from the approved project system.
IEC 60598-2-22:2021 specifies particular requirements for emergency luminaires on emergency power supplies not exceeding 1,000 V and includes clarification of the contrast-measurement method for exit signs. It is a product-standard reference. It does not choose the project's legend, route direction, installation position or destination-market approval path.
Map every sign to a route decision
Assign each proposed sign a unique reference on the latest escape-route drawing. For that reference, record what an occupant should understand when approaching from each relevant direction. Single face or double face follows the sightline
A single-face exit sign presents its message in one viewing direction and commonly fits a wall-backed location where occupants approach from the front. A double-face sign presents a message in two opposing directions and may suit a corridor or open approach when suspended, ceiling-mounted or end-mounted. These are procurement descriptions, not universal placement rules.
Before choosing the face count, stand at or model every approach point. Check whether walls, doors, beams, ducts, shelving, decorations or future fit-out can block the sign. Mounting is a product and building interface

Viewing distance must be declared for the exact sign
Exit-sign viewing distance depends on the sign system, legend dimensions, contrast or luminance, viewing geometry, ambient conditions and the method required by the adopted project rules. It is not established by the enclosure width alone.
Ask the supplier to identify the declared viewing distance for the exact legend and sign family, the standard or calculation basis used, and any conditions attached to that declaration. The project designer should then check sign positions, approach distances and obstructions against the adopted method.
Established manufacturers show why the evidence is model-specific. Maintained mode, duration and input are separate decisions
An internally illuminated exit sign is often operated in maintained mode so the sign remains illuminated during normal occupancy and continues its emergency function after loss of the normal supply. Check environment, testing and maintenance access
Write the actual environment into the RFQ: indoor dry corridor, public hall, dusty warehouse, damp location, exposed exterior route, cold space or another defined condition. IEC 60529 classifies enclosure protection using the IP code, but an IP rating alone does not prove impact resistance, temperature suitability, ultraviolet resistance, corrosion resistance, condensation control or approval for every outdoor location.
The installation and maintenance plan should identify the test button or self-test system, charge indicator, fault indication, battery access, legend cleaning, inspection route and replacement parts. A suspended sign that cannot be safely reached or a battery hidden behind an unapproved ceiling detail creates an operational problem even if the initial sample works.
